Obama Admin. Finalizes Historic Clean Car Standards

Today the Obama administration finalized new clean car standards that will double the fuel efficiency of today’s vehicles by 2025, drastically reducing emissions of carbon pollution and cutting oil use in Minnesota and nationwide. The standards will cover new cars and light trucks in model years 2017-2025, and require those vehicles to meet the equivalent of a 54.5 miles-per-gallon standard by 2025.

Advisory: New Report -- Extreme Downpours on the Rise in Minnesota

Environment Minnesota will hold a press conference on Tuesday July 31st to release a new report documenting the increase in the frequency of extreme rainstorms over the past 65 years in Minnesota. Recent extreme rainstorms, such as the storm that hit Duluth in June of 2012 and which caused $100 million in damages, are highlighted as part of a larger trend of bigger storms occurring more often—a trend that scientists have linked to global warming.

Boundary Waters Wilderness, Minnesota Public Lands at Risk of Destruction and Development

At a press conference overlooking the Mississippi River, Environment Minnesota released a new report today exposing how pristine areas in northern Minnesota are at risk from road-building, sulfide mining, sale to private interests, other destructive development, and the loss of environmental protection if bills moving through the House of Representatives are signed into law. The report, “Trashing our Treasures: Congressional Assault on the Best of America,” exposes a startling trend of legislative attacks on our nation’s treasured places, like the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the Superior National Forest, and Voyageurs National Park.

Pending Vote in Congress Today Would Water-down Environmental Protections for Public Lands

“Minnesotans don’t want watered-down protections for our clean water.” Said Samantha Chadwick, Preservation Advocate for the grassroots organization Environment Minnesota. The organization and its members are concerned about the bill’s potential impact on public lands in Minnesota as well as treasured lands around the country.
