It would be easy to assume that Minnesota has all the policy support it needs to see a healthy amount of solar installations. The state has a renewable energy standard that compels utilities to obtain 25 to 30 percent of their energy from renewable sources over the next decade and a half. However, the RES has largely gone to support wind development. Now a large and well-organized coalition is pushing to pass a solar electricity standard of 10 percent by 2030.

Runoff from old mines raises fears

Pollution problems near the Boundary Waters are raising concerns about future Minnesota mining projects. Environmental groups have found high concentrations of metals leaching into streams and wetlands from two long-closed sources: one old test mine and one abandoned mine. The pollution runs off waste rock excavated decades ago and piled at the sites.
