Wind Power for Minnesota

American wind energy is powering the equivalent of nearly 13 million homes, avoiding as much carbon pollution as if 14 million cars were taken off the road, and supporting 75,000 American jobs. But the continued success of wind power is at risk if Congress does not act now.

Program

Solar Works for Minnesota

Too much of our energy comes from dirty sources that harm our environment. But it doesn’t have to be that way. We can put solar on 200,000 roofs in the next decade.

Program

Save the Boundary Waters

Mining companies are pushing to conduct a toxic new form of mining, called sulfide mining, right outside of the Boundary Waters and near Lake Superior. Runoff from sulfide mining can create toxic sulfuric acid and cause mercury contamination—both of which could leach into the Boundary Waters and pollute this precious area. We need the EPA to make sure we don't risk this natural treasure by allowing dangerous sulfide mining in the area

Program

Protect the 10,000 Lakes

Short-sighted legal decisions have left more than half of Minnesota’s streams and hundreds of acres of wetlands vulnerable to pollution and development. Now, polluters’ allies in Congress—including Minnesota’s Rep. Michele Bachmann—are trying to block the EPA from restoring vital safeguards. To protect Minnesota’s lakes, we need to show massive public support for clean water.

Program

Protect Minnesota's Rivers

Minnesota's rivers should be state treasures. But runoff from industrial agriculture threatens our rivers with algae blooms, harms fish and other wildlife and causes dead zones. The state of Minnesota can prevent excessive runoff pollution and protect our rivers by establishing and enforcing science-based pollution standards for farming operations, but big agribusiness and their political allies stand in the way. To stop runoff pollution to our waterways, we need to show massive public support for our rivers.

Minneapolis Energy Options

Cities can typically change their energy future only once in 20 years, when their long-term contracts ("franchises") with electricity and gas companies expire. For Minneapolis, that time is now. Minneapolis Energy Options is a grassroots campaign to urge the city of Minneapolis to seek significantly more conservation, energy efficiency, and local renewable energy through—or instead of—its contract negotiations with Xcel Energy and CenterPoint energy, in order to meet its aggressive climate goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2025.

Program

Drive Electric Minnesota

The environmental costs of our oil dependence are out of control — from the accidents and spills, to smog, to climate change. It's time to set this country on a path to getting off oil for good. Drive Electric Minnesota is a partnership of local and state governments, Xcel Energy, private businesses and non-profit groups. We are excited about the benefits electric vehicles can provide to reduce our dependence on dirty imported energy and decrease transportation pollution in the coming years.

Program

Clean Air, Healthy Families

New carbon pollution standards will help protect our health. The coal industry and many utilities are trying to block these standards, but we're urging the EPA to move forward with commonsense standards to help protect our health and our environment.
